Crystal Reports 2016 Installation problems

I am trying in vain to evaluate crystal reports 2016 to see if we want to purchase. Three times I have tried to install. Once it had fatal errors, and the second two times it reported success. Never have I been able to run the program. Even through I run the setup explicitly AS ADMINISTRATOR (right click and all), it seems to not modify the registry. There are no SAP BusinessObject registry keys for me to inspect. I am using a Dell workstation on a network domain, but the program is being loaded on the local workstation. And I am an administrator on the local station. I am also and administrator for our network, but I don’t know why I’d need to have that privilege, so I haven’t tried it yet. When I try to run the program I get:

“Missing installdir reg key for installiverse, required for uninstall. Key: SOFTWARE\SAP BusinessObjects\Suite XI 4.0\Installer\aurora”

“Value: Path”

When I click OK I get an “Assertion failure” message box saying “A fatal error has occurred which has caused the installer to quit. Please gather any %TEMP% and installer logs to present to your support personnel.”

When I try right clicking on the Crystal Reports Icon and go to the file location, it takes me to a shortcut that points to crw32.exe, which doesn’t exist. Following instructions found in your knowledge base, I copied all the files necessary, but without the registry keys, nothing works.

Try to extract the Crystal Reports installation to the root Folder on C: drive. Then install from there.

Hi Greg,

It's likely your AV software blocking access for the installer to update the registry.

Copy the installer locally, disconnect your network cable and then disable your AV software and try again

Or create a rule in your AV software and add the installer as trusted.

I received the exact same error message installing on my Windows 10 workstation. We had to Uninstall MS Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x64) & MS Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x86), download the latest versions from Microsoft, reinstall both, & then Crystal Reprots 2016 installed successfully.

You can also go to your %TEMP% location and see if there is a setupengine.log there in one f the dirs., see what it has to say about install issues.

In the end, it seems that I had to unregister and re-register msiEXEC.exe, and then the installation worked. Now I have another problem. I'm using Clarion TPS database files with a Clarion Read-Only ODBC driver. Seems the driver works - I can see all the tables. When it try to import a table, CR crashes.
