Dear Archiving experts,

Is it possible to perform data archiving without implementing data aging?

OR

Can I archive transactional data directly from Hot storage area?

Thanks,

Ajay

Hello Ajay,

Yes, the classical SAP archiving concept still exists in S/4HANA since it is based on the Web Application Server ABAP and therefore database independent, i.e. you can archive direct from hot data. Data Aging is a new concept only available for S/4HANA. Please check this blog by Former Member for an overview:

Data Management in the Era of S/4HANA

Best regards

Hi Ajay,

Data archiving is independent of data aging. You can perform it before aging, after aging or without activating data aging at all.

Archiving still works as on ERP for all objects. The only glitch as I see is, with the introduction of new tables in S/4 HANA, data can be written to the archive but will not be deleted. An example to this is in case of archiving object MM_EKKO, table PRCD_ELEMENTS replaces KONV table. When you perform archiving, data is only written to the archive file but never deleted from the database.

Can you please clarify ? How is it archiving if no data is deleted from the database? Is there any sap official document which explains this in more details that in S/4 the way archiving works is different

On a side note : in S/4 with ILM-data aging - does it allow using a secondary database to keep cold storage? Or the data will still reside inside HANA . i.e our requirement is in addition of better usage of memory (which S/4 data aging concept naturally brings), we also want to optimize the disk usage and put cold storage on a secondary database and use smart data integration if possible to this secondary database from S/4HANA

The scenario I`m talking about is an exception, one wherein a table in ECC(KONV to be specific) has been replaced in S/4 HANA(by PRCD_ELEMENTS). Default access is only to read the table and not for a deletion operation. All other tables in MM_EKKO do get archived (write + delete). This doesn't mean archiving works different in S/4 HANA. It works the same way as in ECC. There is no official SAP document to explain but I played around with aging and archiving in 2 s/4 hana sandbox systems and the result was same.

Also note that, this isn't applicable to new tables, one of which is ACDOCA. It can be archived (write+delete) by archiving object FI_DOCUMNT. Also can be aged by aging object FI_DOCUMENT.

No, cold storage still remains within HANA.

Hello Ajay,

Yes archiving can be triggered for the hotdata and put into an archiving file.

The purpose of ILM and Data aging are different.

Data Aging is for data management in S4. This moves data into partitions.

ILM provides retention features and also destruction.

Deletion and destruction is also possible with ILM.
