Hi
We can imagine Enterprise Portal as the upper layer on the R/3 System. To post the results or reports on Internet in a formatted way we require to develop a portal, for that we are using the Enterprise Portals for developing the portals. The main advantage of using the EP is we can easily develop the portals with out much of code and with the help of navigation tools we r able to develop the portals very easily. We can define the contents and look and feel of the portal.
I think this is enough to start with

Hi,
In lame terms the Portal is used as a companies internal website to carry out their operations.
Say for example you are an employee of a company and you want to create an Absence request. If your company is using SAP as the backend to manage their HR functions then you could possible be creating a Absence request in the backend system through the portal. The portal delivers iViews which are nothing but webpages which can post data to the SAP system.
The EP is a self contained unit of the Netweaver stack and it can connect to various backend systems like ERP, CRM or SRM.
Hope this information is sufficient to get started
