Error duing Knowledge Management Startup 7.0 sp 9

We installed a java system for BI portal, nw2004s so we're at version 7.0 and sp 9. The first portal installed ok. The 2nd install appeared to install ok as well, except when logging into the portal the message 'Error duing Knowledge Management Startup' appears. Also the error occurs if you go to Content Admin -> Km Content. There are some java exceptions thrown, and I saw the other posts re: this error, but they haven't shed any light on fixing the issue. Any feedback on resolutions that have worked for this for this version?
