Is it a tool/program?

XI Adapter is mode of communication available in SAP XI. And it is an inbuild program avilable in the form of xi resources for communication. It is not a tool.

We require to purchase it seperately?

Not req for xi default adapters. For third part adapters yes u need to do so.

how does it work?

for this u need to gothru the adapter framework concept. this gives a clear explanation. Adapter Engine is based on the adapter framework(AFWK). AFWK is based on SAP J2EE engine and the JCA. AFWK provides interfaces for configuration. This also provides common func to AE and PCK.It has his own queuing and logging service. In other words AFEK is the core of AE which provides common funtianality to all kind of adapters like monitoring, queuing and security.

Hi,

1. Is it a tool/program?

Neither of them exactly. But Adapters behaves like tools to process the messages.

2. We require to purchase it seperately?

These adapters comes with XI installation licence. So no need to pay anything extra for these.

Adapters Running on the Integration Server (Idoc, HTTP)

Adapters Running on the J2EE (File, RFC, JDBC, JMS, SOAP, Mail, XI)

3. how does it work?

You use the Adapter Engine to connect the Integration Engine to SAP systems (RFC adapter) and external systems.

Adapters resides on Adapter Engine. U have to select these adpters in Integratio Dirctory --> Communication Channel

The message processing is done in the following way (Great Blog)

All the adapters perform different functions as described here
