Hana Express 2.0 SPS 01(VM): Timed out while waiting for apps

Former Member

Hi All, I finally received my brand new notebook ( CPU intel i7-6820HQ, 32 GB RAM with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit) and very enthusiastic about running HXE 2.0 on it.

After I downloaded the server+apps VM(hxexsa.ova) file, I managed to import it into the latest Virtual Box(Version 5.1.22 r115126). In the settings-system I set the Base memory to 24GB and CPU 4.

Then I followed the "Getting_Started_HANAexpress_VM.pdf" that came along with the download and started the VM, answered all questions and entered all necessary passwords. The final question I answered was "Proceed with configuration?" I entered "Y".

After several minutes my enthusiasm turned into frustration as I haven't been able to pass through this error ever since:

"Timed out while waiting for apps: cockpit-adminui-svc, cockpit-admin-web-app

Please start required Cockpit apps and rerun register_cockpit.sh."

I have experimented the following without success:

- changed the VM setting(RAM) from 24GB to 28GB

- deleted the VM and re-import the hxexsa.ova file

- Entered Proxy Settings (in office) when asked by the config.script

- No Proxy Settings (at home) when asked by the config.script

I do hope somebody could give me a hint because I have made zero progress for more than a week despite many attempts.

I did find another post with exact same issue but unfortunately without response:

https://answers.sap.com/questions/186724/hanaexpress-20-sps-01-vm-timed-out-while-waiting-f.html

Thanks.

Hi,

Did you manage to over come this issue?

Hi Yadlapalli,

unfortunately not. In fact, I have tried all possible known combinations and workarounds that are possible

(with and without VPN) and none of them works:

a) VM version (i.e. hxexsa.ova) with the issue describes above

b) VM + Binary version: as per Frank Schuler's tip below:

https://blogs.sap.com/2017/01/20/tips-tricks-for-an-optimized-hana-2.0-express-edition-installation-...

which consists of following steps:

- 1st: import VM (server only: hxe.ova) to gain SLES 12 SPS1 + SAP HXE2 SPS01 server only

- 2nd: uninstall the SAP HXE2 SPS01 server only which was installed with the VM in the first step

- 3rd: re-install the binary version - server only (hxe.tgz)

- 4rd: install the binary version - apps only (hxexsa.tgz)

I cannot pass the 3rd step due to sudoers list issue (“hxe2sunny is not in the sudoers file) as per my question to Frank in the link above

c) Manually install SLES 12 SPS1 + Binary version

I came to this idea after I found this:

https://www.penninkhof.com/2016/10/setup-and-suse-for-sap-hana-express-edition/

- 1st: download and install DVD 1 of SLES 12 SPS1 from Suse.com

- 2st: download and install the binary versions as per:

https://www.sap.com/developer/tutorials/hxe-ua-installing-binary.html

This approach was the most promising of all since it went well for hours....until it terminated with the error:

"Installation of SAPUI5 FESV3 XSA 1 - SAPUI5 SDK 1.44 failed".

Since I took a snapshot of the VM prior to running the "sudo ./setup_hxe.sh" I repeated the installation of the

binary version 3 times and surprisingly they all terminated with different errors but the last one came back with the

"Installation of SAPUI5 FESV3 XSA 1 - SAPUI5 SDK 1.44 failed" which confirmed that this is the real issue.

All of the approaches above failed during the XSA installation, not the server.

Overall I have been "wasting" my time for at least a week with no result.:-(

I am really questioning how many HXE2 enthusiasts out there have been successfully installed it on their machines.

Hello Sunaryo,

I had the same issue and developed an alternative approach to overcome it:

Tips & tricks for an optimized HANA 2.0, express edition installation on an Intel 6th generation NUC

I use VMware, but that should hopefully not make to much of a difference.

Hi folks, I finally had an Eureka moment yesterday which I did not expect: as the last desperate effort, I took inspiration from

user Elias Kekakos's comment on "https://answers.sap.com/questions/186724/hanaexpress-20-sps-01-vm-timed-out-while-waiting-f.html#" .

All my previous 6 Virtual box's VMs (and attempts) were located on an external 1 TB HDD (Western Digital My passport Ultra) with USB 3.0 interface. So, in Virtual Box's settings ( File - preferences - General: Default Machine Folder) I switched it from my HDD external drive (D) to my small 250GB internal SSD drive (C). Next I copied the hxexsa.ova file from D to C and followed the steps of "https://www.sap.com/developer/tutorials/hxe-ua-installing-vm-image.html" and "https://www.sap.com/developer/tutorials/hxe-ua-getting-started-vm.html".

Obviously either the USB 3.0 interface's speed is too slow or the Read/Write data rate within the external HDD is too slow which caused the Time out.

At least I can now proceed with the next steps and face the next upcoming issues 🙂

Hi Frank, many thanks for your Tips & tricks, which I will certainly try out!

I do however have following Qs:

1) which command did you call to uninstall HXE2?

If I look at "Getting_Started_HANAexpress_VM.pdf" that comes along with the downloaded files, on page 50 step#2 there are 2 possibilities: a) xs uninstall XSAC_HANA_EA_D --delete-services (uninstall the component plus the HDI container and repository database)

b) xs uninstall XSAC_HANA_EA_D (delete the component but retain the HDI container and repository database)

2) Would it be a huge issue if I choose not to register (and subscribe) with the https://dyn.com/dns/ ?

Generally what I am struggling to understand is why SAP, despite many enthusiasts having the same issue, does not provide a clear solution to it but for now, I will be very happy already I could move forward with this issue.

Best regards
