Why Won't Crystal Reports Load?

Former Member

This may end up being a general Windows issue, but I'd like to exhaust my options before completely reloading. One of my clients is running Crystal Reports 2011 (I know, old, they don't like upgrading) and whenever he opens the application the Crystal Reports 2011 window appears but nothing actually loads (mouse icon spins like it's trying to load something and the app will respond to being closed/reopened, but even hours of waiting gains no results). I rebuilt his profile and it worked while he was logged in under the new profile even after I logged him out/back in and rebooted, but as soon as he logged in the next morning it was back to the same behavior. He's running Windows 10 and this was working properly until about a week ago. I've tried disabling his print spooler and also removing any invalid devices to no avail. Any ideas?

Hi David,

It's not easy to find but CR 2011 did not support Windows 10 until SP 12. Get them to upgrade....

Just because they don't like to update doesn't mean they can't though and in this case it may be their only option.

One of the best practices is to install Crystl Reports by right-click setup.exe and select "Run as Administrator". If you not using the option then Crystal Reports may not be properly configured in HKEY Local Machine registry. As the result after restart it would not find it.

The best utility to see what is going on is Process Monitor.

It may help to find if you are missing registry or missing some files.

Could it be some kind of Security software blocking the application (crw32.exe) from execution? Check your Antivirus blacklist.

It could be also Windows Data Execution Prevention (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366553(v=vs.85).aspx)

I just tried uninstalling, deleting any of the remaining "Business Objects" data from the %appdata% folder, and then reinstalling again. Still failing. I'm open to suggestions. He's running Windows 10 Anniversary Update x64 and Crystal Reports 2011 SP2.

Nothing works, no. Now I'm not even able to close out of the application (have to close via Task Manager). I tried running a repair on the application and it completed successfully, but that did not resolve the issue. I've completely uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled but it's still doing this. It's even doing it under other user profiles. I'm at a loss here.

The middle part is Just a Start Page downloaded from SAP website. If there is no Internet access or it is blocked then the page would not be loaded.

Does the toolbar is working? Can you create a report?

Neither worked, unfortunately. Nothing is displayed in Process Monitor and starting as an admin ended in the same result - The Crystal Reports 2011 window opens, the toolbars appear up top, but nothing loads in the main area (it's solid blue). Any other suggestions?
