Creating variant in MM71.

Can anyone give me a step by step process to create a variant in MM71.I want to delete materials permanently(ie those which were flagged for deletion).I tried to the variant and run the job but when i go back to check to see if the materials were actually deleted they were still being displayed.Please help!
