Hello to the whole community,

I am currently working on merge two SAP BuinessObject BI4.x platforms in my company, one under BI4.0 (on Oracle) and the other under BI4.1 (on BW / HANA). Please can anyone help me on how to proceed? Which of both platforms should host the final platform? What benefits can this merger bring to my business? What are the impacts on users and IT teams?

thank you very much for your Return.

You cannot merge both the systems just like that. Since you have 4.1 which is higher version than 4.0, you can stick with 4.1 for now. Use the promotion management move all the content like reports, universes, users etc from 4.0 system to 4.1.

Thanks a lot for your answer,
I could use my license from BI4.0 after promotion to BI4.1, or I have to buy new licenses?
The promotion operation has a cost? If so can you tell me how much it can cost me please?
Thank you again for your help.

you can use the same license. There is no need to buy separate license for 4.1. Promotion management is part of CMC. It is not a separate app or cost you anything. If you are admin or access to CMC, you should be able to see Promotion management in CMC. Check the admin guide for more information on Promotion management.

As for benefits, from maintenance standpoint, you will have less number of systems to maintain / patch - more or less like a shared services model putting it too simplistically. For users, unless you are going to increase resources / add nodes, they may see reduced performance assuming both systems are currently consumed. So you will need to re-size and it can get more complex depending on few other things like

- number of users / servers on both these environments

- is everything sized appropriately

- are they all enterprise users or AD/ldap /sap users

- Is front end / webapp url changing or is it going to be different etc

Jawahar answered most of your questions, as to :

"What benefits can this merger bring to my business? "

What do you mean ?

"What are the impacts on users and IT teams?"

What users and IT teams do you have and how do they use this products ?

Thanks for your answer,
- "What benefits can this merger bring to my business?" What do you mean?
I want to know if merging our BO platforms will have benefits (on cost, performance, quality of service) for my business.
- "What are the impacts on users and IT teams?" What users and IT teams do you have?

We have Web Intelligence, Crystal and Analysis Workbook users for both platforms. Some users develop their report but most of them use the reports developed by the IT teams.

We have an IT team on each platform, these teams Are constituted of developers (universe and report) and administrators

Thanks for your feedback

Well, let's see - benefits to business : less products to maintain and pay licensing for. After merge the IT team responsible for 4.0 is no longer needed...

Users and IT impact - users of 4.0 will need to switch to 4.1 and learn new URL's and system names. 4.0 IT team will have to find something else to do...
