I am not sure of any documentation, however I can tell you how it works.
The counting rules are used for coulding the number of leave days in a span of leave applied by an employee. For example if an employee has applied leave from 1st april 2007 to 20th april 2007, which is 20 calendar days, how many of them should be treated as leave days?.
If only the working days are to be treated as leave days, you need to set up a counting rule so that only working days are counted. How you do that, you select all the weekdays and weekends (provided workdays can fall on weekends too) and all the DWS class which corresponds to working time and the day type as 0 or blank (which means that the day is work-paid day). When all the mentioned conditions are satisfied, only then a day will be treated as working day and counted as leave day. Similarly you can set up any kind of counting rule based on the scenario.
2. Deduction rule: If you want the number of leave as counted above to be deducted from a set of entitlement (quota), you enter the deduction rule in the counting rule. For that you should have mentioned the deduction rule before... otherwise you can maintain counting rule; go out; maintain deduction rules and come back again to counting rule to maintain the deduction rule. In the deduction rule, you maintain from which entitlements a particular leave should be deducted. It can be only entitlement or a set of entitlements. If you are maintaining a set of entitlements, then you need to maintain some priorities for telling the system, in which order the entitlement should be used for the mentioned leave type.
