classification view of material master

Hi Expertise,

Would any body so kind to tell me "what is the main use of classification view of material master".

As per my knowledge it mainly use for searching material.

I have created some material with classification view(class with characteristics).

But while ordering (through PO) or receiving material it is not asking me for entering the character of that material.

I would be much appreciate your quick response.

Hi Sahu,

This is mainly used for distributing data for eg consider the following business scenario :

Assume that material master data is maintained on central system for the entire company and there are roughly 20,000 materials. Of these 20,000 materials approximately 5000 are to be distributed to System A ( e.g Sales system) and the rest to System B ( e.g PP system).

To do this you can use classification system to categorize materials based on criteria that allow you to distinguish materials for a specific system.

Tcods are :

O1CL - Creating Class Type

O1CL - Maintaining status for the class type

O1CL - Maintaining Classification status

CL01- Maintaining Classes

BD68 - Allocating classes to logical system

Classification system is used to classify any object (say Material) with a set of attributes (characteristics). Usually you define a Class (CL01) of a specific class type – say 001 (if you want to classify the material characteristics) or 200 / 300 (if you want to use the classification for variant configuration) or say 023 (If the material is produced in batches and you want to classify the material batches). In the classification tab in the material master you assign the required Class to a material. Class would contain all the characteristics. As a matter of fact you would define all the characteristics (CT04) and assign them to the class, and subsequently assign the class to the material. That way the material gets classified with all the characteristics in that class, which can be made use of in various processes.

Examples –

If you classified a material with Class Type – 001 material class, you can assign set of characteristics values in the material master in the 001 class, to assign material properties or product attributes in the material master.

If you have classified a material with 200 / 300 variant class, the characteristic can be made use of in variant configuration.

If you have classified the material with 023 (batch class), and if the material is batch managed is ticked on QM material master view, you can create a batch for the material (MSC1N) and assign characteristic values to the batch. Subsequently you can do inventory posting to create stock with the specific batch no!

Can we multiple classification for a single material.That is to say, can we classify the material with class type 001, & 300 & 023. (all the three)?

Yes you can have all the three classifications 001, 300/200, 023 class types assigned to same material. They are different type of class types and have different purposes.

However you cant assign two different classes of same class type to same materil/object.

Hi,

Please find the example of usage of classification view of material master

if you are using Batch management and you want to classify batches as per Vendor and Price ( for example same material are being procured from different vendors with different price ) in that kind of business scenarios we can define class type in this example 023 and further we can define the class characteristics like

Vendor Name and MRP.

this will be used at the time of creating batch based on characteristics created with class type.
