Error when calling BPM synchronously - Response did not arrive for request

I am attempting to call a BPM process from PI via a synchronous interface. There is an external system that sends a SOAP request to PI and BPM sends a synchronous response back to PI to forward the response to the external system. This works well until I add an intermediate event in my BPM process. For example, we need to look up a value in a database via an RFC call. The RFC call is made in Message Mapping in PI. I've created an async interface to make the call out of BPM and added an intermediate message to receive the response from the above (BPM is the sender and the received in this ICO). Unfortunately as soon as an intermediate message is added PI can no longer call BPM with the original synchronous interface and this error occurs after a lengthy timeout:

Response did not arrive for request

and

Could not determine mapping steps for message

Please let me know if someone had encountered anything similar and whether there is a fix for it.

Thanks.
