Design Studio - Group values into "Other" Bucket

Hi All,

I have a requirement to Show a top performing report but grouping any values that are less than a certain % share of the total into a generic "Other" Group.

E.g.

AAA 50 33%

BBB 40 27%

CCC 30 20%

DDD 20 13%

EEE 10 7%

Total 150

On the above data I need to show the data of any values < 20% as "Other"

AAA 50 33%

BBB 40 27%

CCC 30 20%

Other 30 20%

Total 150

Does anyone have any experience of doing this in Design Studio. If it helps I am using SAP BW for the source of the data. I'd be grateful for any help you can offer.

Hi Nigel,

I would try doing those groupings back in the BEx query - using restricted key figures (or calculated key figures) - and then use that as a data source to Design Studio. Your application would run faster

Hi Nigel,

Your requirement is a common one and I will re-enforce Tammy's suggestion by saying that implementing such a scenario should not even be attempted on the client side (i.e. Design Studio) but in the backend instead as matter of best practice. The following blog post describes very well an approach for implementing your requirement via BEx Queries: How to visualize 'Others' in SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio?

Regards,

Mustafa.

Hi Nigel,

Mustafa and Tammy are correct, better to do it in BEX/BW, try using a virtual char. One that depends on your KF should do the trick, please check out this doc:

Thanks Tammy, Mustafa & Koen for your replies. I did try to do this in BEx and came across the How to visualize 'Others' in SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio? blog. Unfortunatley as the top n value is based upon a % which the user wants to control, I'm not able to implement this. This is referenced as a limitation on the Blog. I'll take a look at the Virtual characteristics as an answer but again as the user wants flexibility I'm not sure this will suffice. Given that this is a standard feature on other visualisation toolsets I'd have thought that Design Studio would be capable of doing this out of the box.
