Customer Returns to be repaired by another vendor

Customer has defective parts (under warranty). Customer calls customer service for the assembly company who builds that product "My Company". "My Company" customer service creates RMA to return parts to My Company. Parts are received into 3010 repair location (Sales Order stock). These parts need to be returned to the vendor (let's call it "Vendor 1") for repair. Here's the question... does My Company just return the parts to Vendor 1 on a Vendor 1 RMA? Why I ask... Defective parts caught in-house use a return PO to return the part (therefore procurement/buyer/planner/anyone can see that this part will be returned for use later). However, this is a field return, so we don't want anyone to see this as available, so using a return PO is a bad idea.... right? We should just leave the parts in 3010 Repair Location and use the Vendor 1 RMA for tracking, right?
