Design Studio - Can't edit query - Network issue?

A user of mine has always had issues creating relational connections in Information Design Tool on their workstation (connecting to the server), it would freeze for 20-30 minutes before it brings up the screen to add a connection.


Any how, fast forward to today, I installed Design Studio server 1.6 on the BI Platform (4.2 SP3), install the Design Studio client on the server as well, everything is fine.

I install the client on his machine, and he can connect to the BI platform, but once he goes to edit the query specification it just craps out and gives error at the bottom of this post.

I will add, they've got Windows firewall on the server and workstation, I can't find anywhere online that dictates what Port(s) Design Studio uses.

Any thoughts?

com.crystaldecisions.sdk.exception.SDKRuntimeException$UnexpectedCause: An unexpected error has occurred. The exception thrown was: Unable to find servers in CMS BI.company.com:6400 and cluster @BI.company.com:6400 with kind fileserver and service FileStoreV2.   • I had the same related issue with IDT taking ages to return connections dialog, but it's been so long ago, I cannot remember which firewall port it turned out to be that was the cause, but as you suspect, it was related to a firewall port for us as well.

    Regarding your Design Studio issue, my understanding is that it communicates over web service URL and that's it. The error you shared sounds like the FRS (File Repository Server) is/was down. Can you check with your Admin, or look in CMC under Servers?

  • In addition to Mike's suggestion, can the user use Design Studio locally? At first I thought it could be memory on the desktop but it doesn't sound like it now

    Thanks to you both.

    Design Studio Client works fine on the server itself, just not off of the server. We've set ports on all servers making sure they're allowed, it fixed the IDT issue...still waiting on the client to let me know if it fixed Design Studio as well.

    The best way to deal with this error is to assign static ports to all BO servers and open them over the firewall for bi-direction communication.

    Refer the BO Administrators guide to know how to assign a static port to BO Servers and contact your windows team and network team to open the ports on windows firewall, third party antivirus software and hardware firewalls.

      Thanks, we did this and it fixed the IDT issue.

      Waiting to hear on design studio, but I suspect it will be fine as well.
