DMS and KPRO
Has anyone had any experience with creating a DIR that points to a document stored on another server via a URL. Such that the original document is not physically checked into the DMS vault. When I enter the URL as the orginal application file the DMS checks the file into the vault and the URL is lost. Is there possibly a better way to try and reference the URL so that I can get to the document and utilize the functions/features I need from SAP?
Thank you for replying in advance.
In DMS customizing
1. Specify data carrier of type 'external DMS'.
2. Define workstation application 'URL' and under 'Define workstation application in network' create entries for application type 1(Display), 2(Change) and 3(Print) with data carrier type that you defined in first step.

Hi,
thanks for your help. I tried to follow your suggestions: I set up a data carrier of type "external DMS" in DC20, and after setting up a new WS-Appl. "URL" (in DC30) I tried to "define WS-Application in Network". Problem: During this step SAP only offers to me those "data carrier types" that are defined in DC20 under "... type server, front end". I am unable to choose the external-DMS-carrier-type. If I type in the data carrier type I defined earlier I get the following error:
You cannot use data carrier type Z1 - try displaying possible entries
Message no. V&020
Diagnosis
You want to use a data carrier type that has either not been defined or
that cannot be used in this situation.
Any ideas?
I am sorry. I mixed up. Select data carrier type that SAP is allowing you to select. Make sure to put %AUTO% under Application(path and program name).
During config of external DMS, also define external DMS under it e.g. INTERNET
Now while creating a document through CV01N, create original with workstation application URL, Data Carrier INTERNET and Original http://www.sap.com
It should open sap.com in your default browser when you double click it.
Thanks,
Pranav
P.S. Sorry for the confusion
Thank you very much for your reply. I have completed the configuration per your suggestion. I tried to create a new document via cv01n and was able to create the DIR with the webpage. The lock on the original document is unlocked. When I go to close the lock it returns an error 'file http://www.sap.com could not be accessed'. Am I supposed to be able to lock the document?
Hello,
I've followed the thread because we have the same problem. We made all the suggested changes but unfortunately we were not able to add URLs as original applications. We received an error message - which does not say much: "E:26:504 com URL". After some debugging we found out, that the URL http://www.sap.com was treated as a file with the extension .com -> this resulted in the error message. We've made a number of screenshots, with all our customization settings. Can you tell us what to do to add URLs.

That is a tricky one. I do not have a solution for you, but a few comments:
My first try was to go to the "originals" tab in the DIR, hit "create" and enter the URL (e.g. http://help.sap.com) in the field "Original". Choose an appropriate WS-Application. Do not check in the original (doc-type / status must be configured not to automatically check it in). Problem is, when you try to display the webpage, SAP tries to acces the "file" http:
help.sap.com and that does not work. I tried around with the config for the WS-applications (DC30), but I was not able to figure out anything so far.
My second try was to create a standard Windows-link-file (extension .url). If you add such a file as an original to the DIR and check it in, not the file is checked in but rather the website behind the link. This seems to be Windows trying to be smart and handing the web page instead of the actual URL-file. This can be overcome by manually entering the path and filename of the url-file (or, interestingly, by using EasyDMS), but even then double clicking such an original will start up the browser and only display the content of the url-file.
It should be possible to program some kind of viewer, but that is out of my scope.
Sorry for not having a better answer. Please let me know if you find a solution.
Cheers,
Thomas
