HI Patrice

The main diference between nonunicode and unicode is storage of data

nonunicode use 1 byte for character while unicode use 2-4 bytes for character.

so if u want to install multi language u need to install unicode, but for unicode u need more space and memory. for example if u want to install language other than english u need to install unicode.nonunicode needs less space then unicode.4.7 ideas comes with nonunicode.

if u want to install XI , u have to choose unicode installation

it is not possible to upgrade from unicode to nonunicode

for example

4.6c nonunicode upgrade to ECC6.0 nonunicode

4.6c unicode to ECC 6.0 unicode

hope this will help u

Unicode at SAP

If your company employs truly global business processes, such as managing global master data, or if you open your system to the Web, by allowing your customers to enter contact data directly via the Internet, chances are that you will need to support multiple local-language characters. Various code pages have enabled the display of national characters, but collaboration on the Web has led to a huge number of language-specific, platform-dependent code pages that must interact with each other. And this compliance is only possible through Unicode - an international standard that supports virtually all of the languages and scripts used in the world, ensuring that they function no matter what the language or platform.

if your source system is 4.6C NON Unicode you can upgrade to ECC 6.0 NON Unicode.

If your source system is 4.6C Unicode you can upgrade to ECC 6.0 Unicode.

It is not possible to do the Unicode Conversion together with the Upgrade. So the following way won't work:

4.6C NON Unicode to ECC 6.0 UNICODE

Hi,

The need to implement Unicode depends on your use of one or more languages in the current SAP system:

If your organization needs to use single code page system then the use of Unicode is not mandatory. For example, German, English, Spanish, Italian, and French all run on code page 1100 and thus can all live in the same system without Unicode. However, using Unicode is recommended if the system is deployed globally to facilitate interfaces and connections.

Hope this will help you.

refer http://service.sap.com/unicode@sap for more details.

do reward if it is useful.

Best Regards,

Sachin.

Hi,

If it's only test system (you mentioned IDES) and you don't need many languages you can install non Unicode system. Keep in mind that Unicode systems need more server resources... Alhough future belongs to Unicode systems...
