Best practise – distrubuted development evnrionments

A common issue that I face at many customers is that there is no best practise or a good way to handle development environments for a group of developers (development environments in this case is not only SAP NW Dev studio, but also includes a J2EE engine and a Portal). In some cases the customer use one shared portal environment with the drawback of interference between developers. In other cases a total pure environment are installed on each client which gives the developer total control over the dev environment but have the disadvantage of increased overhead for installation and upgrades. I have thought of use a VMware/Virutal PC image simplify the handle of dev environments. What implications could this have? Very often the portals has different connection to several back-end system like LDAP,SAP R/3 and so on.

What is your experience or advice?

Pros and Cons of different way to solve the issue?

Best regards
