verify source system is up before start if ETL

Is there a standard SAP delivered way for a process chain to verify that a system is up and available before (or as step one) a process chain executes?

Background:

We had a problem where the r/3 backend database was down due to a backup problem. the R/3 system itself was up (i.e. it would respond to an RFC_PING), but no database access was possible. We would like to be able to call some "standard function" to verify that the system is up and available.

Thanks in advance

Mark

Check the function module SALK_SYSTEM_AVAILABILITY , if it helps.

I think that this is a beginning, but I think that this is effectively just an RFC_PING, there does not appear to be any database access.

I was thinking of maybe using the sapinfo routing that comes with the saprfc dev kit. I am not sure if this would complete the loop to the db though.
