If you are asking in what situations an ALV report is written, then I would say, that an ALV report could be written for any reporting requirement. For example, say that the user wants to get a listing of materials, or a listing of sales document information, or production order information. You can write an ALV report for basically anything.

ALV Reports are not specific to something. It could be related to any functional area like SD, PS, HR. Basically, its a tool to present the data in the form of report which contains many user friendly features.
