Presently, there is a (ASE Sybase 15.7) primary, standby with replication. They are hosted on the Sun Solaris (SPARC 64-bit). There is a proposal to make it into Database HA. Please suggest the best methods to achieve this model with the replication.

Hi Aravind

Can you shed some light on "why" your company wants to go from "primary ==> replicated standby" configuration to "HA" configuration ?

Do you use the current pair for simple load balancing of OLTP (primary) and DSS/Reporting in read only mode (standby) ?

Do you face any issues about smooth switching between primary and standby when needed ?

(A shell scripted switch + OS level DNS update of a logical IP pointing to primary/active server can make this task pretty simple )

HA set up will need a new license + clustering layer on each server + some set up work upfront.

Active + Active set up (assuming that each server can take the whole load) is attractive if you are looking at advanced load balancing

I would start with HA guide (e.g. http://help-legacy.sap.com/Download/Multimedia/pdf-adaptive-server-enterprise/haguide.pdf)

Thank you for the quick response Avinash,

It seems that you have misread the question. The replication needs to be retained. The database HA (option) needs to be designed with the replication. included.

Oops !!

I now see that what you need is HADR (always on) rather than the old "HA" . My bad :-(

I have used the active/standby but not the latest offering HADRyet.

I do see an HADR article by Javier Martin at following URL

https://blogs.sap.com/2015/11/26/sap-ase-160-sp2-hadr-database-always-on-for-custom-applications/

And of course the HADR User guide at

Hi Avinash:

Thank you for the more relevant info. However, ideally it seems that you need ASE 16 and replication 15.7 needs at least SP 204. As mentioned earlier, we do have ASE Sybase servers 15.7 with SP 122 (will be upgraded to 132 - tested) and the rep server SP is 203. I had come across an article for it earlier that was for business suite indicating that it was not tested and database SAP tools are not supposed to be replicated. I had already got one of your sent links via the link below by the same author.

https://blogs.sap.com/2013/10/03/sap-sybase-replication-server-hadr-high-availability-disaster-recovery-for-business-suite-on-ase/

Do you know how to determine the feasibility and compatibility of this mode in case it is a solution for the cuirrent setup?!

Do you use ASE for SAP Business Suite or for custom applications ?

I stumbled on this article by Bill Zhang : Achieve Near-Zero Downtime for SAP Business Suite on ASE

See if this helps

Thanks for the comment and the link Avinash. The link I posted earlier is also for SAP business suite.I don't think if there is a work around for out current configuration.
