Promotions During Merit Cycle Using Positions

Our client is using positions and want the ability to promote employees using the compensation worksheets and perform the promotion during the annual merit increase process using the Compensation planning process (Compensation worksheet view). Right now, the Comp-EC guide refers to 4 standard fields:

Final Job Family, Final Job Role, Final Job Code, and Final Pay Grade

How do we process the promotion if Positions are used instead of Jobs?

I believe, from the document, we can set an custom field in compensation worksheet which maps with EC Category 'EC Promotion' will help.
