It appears that the only way to create a transformation between an infoObject and a dataSource in NW2004S is to flag the infoObject as an infoProvider.
1. Are there any work arounds for this issue?
2. Is there something else provided to map a dataSource to an infoObject, and if so, how does that work in conjunction with a DTP?
We do not want to flag all master data infoObjects as provider objects.
Whenever you will create Tranformation for infoobject it will by default ask you for assigning it as infoprovider, there is no work around for this.
But i do have one tip for you, never assign your object to infoprovider under un-assigned infoarea, otherwise you may face problem with DTP's. We did faced the same problem, and got this reply from SAP, and it worked fine.
Just a suggestion to you, create one infoarea for all the infoboject based infoproviders.

You can do transformations only on infoproviders, so you need to flag ur objects as dataprovider.
