What is the correct approach to handle application/business exceptions?

Hi people!

Vijaya Kumari said exception-handling:

<i>"Exception handling is generally done to Provide an alternate route for the Business functionality if an exception occurs ...for eg. if there is a mapping error then you would want someone to be alerted for the same rather then waiting for someone to come and look why a certain Business process is not completed."</i>

This appear reasonable to me, but I figured out with this phase in XI book of course TBIT40 (exercise 5, page 8):

<i>"In general, alerts should be used to monitor technical errors only. In the case of an application error, the correct approach would be to generate a new message, which would be considered a negative application acknowledgement"</i>

And the indication in SAP Exchange Infrastructure book (Jens Stumpe, Joachin Orb; Galileo Press / SAP Press) of use exception for handling of "business situations" (page 197).

<b> My question is:</b>

<b>When would I make handling of exception using integration process? When handling in application layer? What are the best indications for these type of exception handling? Some case examples?</b>

Thanks a lot!

Ivan, from Brazil!
