modeling time-dependent nav attributes

Hi Master Gurus of the SAP BW world!

I have narrowed down to 2 ways to model as per my requirements:

1. use of time-dependent navigational attribute for my characteristic.

2. use of time-dependent navigational attribute for my characteristic with additional user-defined Date-To Date-From .

What is unclear to me is the 2nd option. I do not really understand it despite so long of aware about this option. I simply do not understand the difference between the 2 and thus not certain which model is the one i need to adopt for my requirement which is to show historic truth with drilldown.

For option 2, I am also confused why so many date columns : From-user, From-sys, To-User, To-Sys.

For option 1, am I right to say that Date-From and Date-To are automatically created when I set my navigational attribute to time-dependent such that I would not need to create these 2 'fields' ?

For the same option 1, I am also unclear after reading the documentation on "multi-dimensional modeling with BW". When user key in the key date = 09/1998, will the report be able to show both values for 09/1998 and 10/1998 at the same time? My understanding is if keydate is entered by user, only this date data will be shown. am I right?

For both options 1 and 2, am I also right to say that they both allow modeling of historic truth such that the results using both models will be the same given same data in cube?

Hope you could help clear my 2 year doubt that has been puzzling me with simple but clear advice.

Thanks

Suzie
