SAP oracle database

Hi,

I'm actually a DBA and rather new to SAP

For SAP system, the oracle database installation is done using the media downloaded from SAP.

For the oracle database bundle patches (SBP), also downloaded via SAP portal.

Is the oracle binary + patches downloaded directly from oracle different compared to the one from SAP?

Can i use the binary downloaded from oracle for SAP oracle installation?

thanks

    Hi Elson,

    Welcome to SAP oracle wold.

You CANNOT use oracle binary (software media, patch) from oracle, if the oracle is used for SAP, you have to download them from SAP.

SAP did lots of customizing for oracle installer, and also sap will select/test oracle patch and combined them into SBP (patch collection).
Please never apply any patch from oracle directly without consulting SAP support.

Also there is no direct oracle binary + patches, you have to download software installation and patch separately.

    Best regards,
    James

It depends through whom the database is licensed. If your database is licensed through SAP then use the packages provided by SAP to patch / upgrade the database.

    Hi Elson,

The answer will depend on the situation, for most cases, the customer will use the Oracle installation media from SAP to perform the installation and patching tasks, but let's say if the customer is using Exadata machine, then normally it'll not using the media from SAP side, cause the vendor or Oracle experts will have already installed and configured the Exadata appliance, thus, you may only use the patch sets shipped from Oracle, not from SAP, this also applies to some advance Oracle installation like RAC, if you have a fine tuned RAC environment, you won't want to tear it down and reinstall it, it's too risky.

That brings as to another question, if you're not using media from SAP, then you won't get support from SAP site regarding Oracle database support, like Reagan mentioned licensing issue.

    Regards,

    Michael
