Version Compatible and sequence of Upgrade

Hallo All,

I am very much confused after checking many notes for the version compatibility and sequence of upgrade need to be followed such as BI, CRM, Portal, ECC.

I have already checked below notes for version compatible for our landscape upgrade plan.

2200904 - Official Violation of Version Interoperability for Business Suite 7i2016

1388258 - Version Interoperability between SAP Business Suite and SAP NetWeaver Systems

Our current environment

ECC: SAP ERP EHP3

BI: SAP NW 7.0

Portal: SAP NW7.0

CRM: SAP NW7.0 EHP2

Planned Target environment:

ECC: SAP ECC EHP8 with NW 7.5

BI: SAP NW 7.5

Portal: SAP NW 7.5

CRM: SAP NW7.0 EHP2 - No plan for Upgrade as we may sundown in near future as we are in migration to Salesforce

As per the note the SAP NW 7.5 is not supported for SAP CRM 7.0 EHP2 and we need it atleast for next years. We also dont want to perform another upgrade in our entire landscape in near future if we decide to SAP NW 7.4 upgrade. Based on the note 1388258 - Version Interoperability between SAP Business Suite and SAP NetWeaver Systems, there is a description mention we dont need to worry if the SAP Bussiness Suite is on 7.0. I have copied the contents from note below.

2. Technology driven software updates: Implementing Enhancement Packages for central SAP NetWeaver 7.0 systems does not require to implement a higher Enhancement Package for a connected SAP Business Suite system, if this system is at least based on SAP Business Suite 7. Upgrading your central SAP NetWeaver system to SAP NetWeaver PI 7.10, PI 7.11, PI 7.30/7.31, PI 7.40, PI 7.50 or to SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.30/7.31, Portal 7.40, Portal 7.50 or to SAP NetWeaver BW 7.30/7.31, BW 7.40, BW 7.50 does not require implementing a higher Enhancement Package for a connected SAP Business Suite system, if this system is at least based on Business Suite 7. (Details are described in SAP note 1468349 and 1874939 - please see also section for SAP NetWeaver Enterprise Portal under 'Known Limitations') These rules applies to SAP NetWeaver Portal, SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse and SAP NetWeaver PI with no known restrictions for the SAP Business Suite 7 and succeeding Enhancement Packages in conjunction with SAP NetWeaver 7.0 and its Enhancement Packages.

Also for SAP Business Suite system with versions below Business Suite 7 an independent upgrade of central SAP NetWeaver systems is possible - please refer for such cases to the Upgrade Dependency Analyzer as mentioned below.

Now I need to know whether I can upgrade my landscape to SAP NW 7.5 for ECC, BI and Portal. Also the sequence of landscape upgrade need to be followed. My suggestion is mentioned below.

Hi Raja,

I can't speak completely to your BI or CRM systems, but you should be able to upgrade your Portal to NW 7.5 first while keeping your ECC system on EhP3. Assuming you use ESS/MSS, you'll upgrade those on the Portal to the NW 7.3 versions -- those will run on NW 7.5 just fine, and I believe they are the latest for WDJ versions of these apps. Then you can follow up with the upgrade of your ECC system to EhP8, while keeping ESS/MSS on WDJ for the time being, and in your Portal you should only have to update the associated Business Packages. Later if you want to migrate ESS/MSS to WDA or Fiori, you can do that as a separate migration project. That will probably be more involved than the basic technical upgrade, anyway. Certainly it will involve more change management.

Bottom line for Portal and ECC: upgrade the Portal first, then ECC.

Hi Raja.

You have to refer the SAP Note 1388258.Your upgrade may be in two different phases. One is NW 7.31(either ECC or Other SAP systems), & another one is finial target level NW 7.5.

1. First you have to upgrade either SAP ECC or BI, Portal & CRM systems to NW 7.31, as mention in the SAP Note 1388258 with PDF attachment. .

2. Could you share the BI & Portal Current version NW 7.0 Support package level?

3. Are you having SAP Solution Manager? You can calculate the stack from current level to target level (either NW 7.3 or 7.5)
