Update Rules

In an update rule definition for key figures can someone clarify that when we say overwrite each time a load is carried out the value is overwritten for a specific key combination whereas for addition a new set of records are added to the table for the key combination or is it the last value for the key combination is added to a new loaded value for the same key combination? Thanks
