Find my way around Integration Builder for design time activities

If I'm starting off for the first time with XI development what would you suggestion, or rather proper process, be for doing my first time exercise?

I have imported the SAP BASIS 6.40 design objects and now wish to do a simple exercise of reading data from flat file and then writing to another, different, flat file.

1. Do I create my design stuff under SAP BASIS 6.40?

2. Do I create my own namespace?

Perhaps there is some article or documentation I can read up on this? I do have an theoretical understanding as to how I go about doing the actual design work its just the start off process I'm not very clear about.

no

create your own software component (in SLD)

import in into repository and inside it

create your own namespace and

then you can create your objects inside it

The above link is one of the better introductions to Exchange Infrastructure that I have seen. It walks you through all of the steps in pretty good detail. There are three parts to that tutorial, the above link is the first part.
