Display Variants - in downloads

Hi gurus

I have a customer address report with every conceivable field a user might need to look at for a customer. To make life easier, the users have created many display variants with only those fields they need for their purpose. Now some of our users have asked that we give them the functionality to download the report (without displaying it on screen first) BUT ONLY THOSE FIELDS THEY HAVE ON THEIR DISPLAY VARIANT.

I can download easily enough, but they'll get all fields. Does anybody know where I can find display variant selected fields so that I can restrict the download?

Thanks in advance. Brigitte

    Thanks,

Naren. Thanks but we don't want the report displayed before downloading. (Also in this case we want it sent to our Unix box so we cant use the functions on the application bar). We have a huge amount of customers and the report often times out. We have put in the functionality "Download to file:" <specify file name> which can be selected then the report run in background - so timeouts are avoided.

I just need to be able to restrict which fields (columns) are downloaded, to those the user wants. If I can use the display variant to do this we'll have some happy users.
