IBM AIX Stability for XI (good and bad stories please)

We're running XI on AIX 5.3 (and hence the IBM JDK) and although I believe we've done all we can in terms of patches, maintenance and tuning across the board; we still continue to have downtime in the JAVA stack once a month.

Is anyone else running XI on the IBM JDK and how has the experience been in terms of stability.

Note - Also interested in the usage of your XI system (we have around 80 production interfaces).

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt Harding,

Very well the AIX will support SAP XI, More over as you mentioned only 80 interfaces, Very well it supports.I have come across executing 100 + Interfaces with the help of AIX environment.

Hi Matt,

We are also running XI on an AIX platform and are having the same symptoms as you: the java part is just freezing once or twice a month: CPU and memory consumptions are normal, it's just that nothing moves.

We have had a long discussion with SAP and they now recommand us to reinstall all the JDK.

Could you tell me a bit more about this problem ? Why do you think it is related to AIX ?

Thanks,

Best regards,

The reason we think maybe AIX is due to the fact that when I talk to other sites running XI at Tech Ed's and the like; there's no real issues with unplanned downtime encountered; and if you recall back a year ago when IBM released the special JDK for SAP; well that just gets you thinking "why does SAP require a special JDK"?

Note - We're are 1 behind the current JVM but plan to install soon.

Thanks for your feedback.

Just as a further update, we were on the SR5 release, and SAP have advised to go to SR6 ASAP. That said, SR7 is a completely new JDK (rewritten or something) coming out for AIX which is meant to address the issues with the old way the JDK handled garbage collection.

Another note for our scenario is that we have 50 Meg messages going regularly through our system; which may have been another specific scenario that would blow our XI system up regularly during garbage collection.

Anyway, just wanted to leave this as a reference...

Hi All,

Just to confirm, the SR6 does have significant issues but we are currently running tests on a new version coming out GA imminently and all is looking very promising. i.e. By resending a failed 10 Meg SOAP message Meg within AIX on SR6 4-10 times (and nothing else happening) we would get an OutOfMemory issue within one hour. This mainly relates to fragementation of memory in SR6 (also relates to extremely large message that are generated by SOAP messages - i.e. 10Meg XML file blows out significantly if you use SOAP as a receiver)

Note - This is on a very reasonably sized system.

Matt
