you can interface with MAXDB in many ways like ODBC, SQLDBC, JDBC, Perl, Python, PHP but I don't know if you can do it directly via web service.

I know you can do it with MS SQLServer.

There is an other popular WAS i.e., WebSphere Application Server V.6.1 of IBM. By the way do you know that Web Application Server of SAP is now known as NetWeaver Application Server (NAS)!

You can use the NW2004s Composite Application Framework to service enable MaxDB. You could also use open source software like Axis.
