Portal display chart of BI reporting seriously damage system

Former Member

Here is the environment of our NW04s system landscape:

1. BI 7.0 server: AIX/AS_ABAP/AS_java/BI_ABAP/BI_java

2. Portal 7.0 server: Windows2003/EP/AS_java/BI_java

and we already patch all components (BI_ABAP/EP/BI_java) to latest SP9, even more we patch IGS java and ABAP both to latest SP5.

when we double click the report link which is stored in Favorites links in BI ABAP initial logon screen, the report appears without any problems.

However we face the following serious problem:

when we switch the report display from "Table" to "Chart", the whole AIX system runs very very slowly, meanwhile BI system works like deadlock and finaly we have to restart the AIX server:-(

To our strange with further investigation, if we execute the report with little volumn of data(say 4 lines of the layout), everything is ok including the Chart display, but if we execute the report with big volumn of data(say 600 lines of the layout), the chart display cause the system dead, furthermore, if we scroll down the 600-line layout with 10 pages for example, it also cause the system dead(but the scroll down behavior works fine in RSRT)!

any expert can give me a hint? we are struggling for this problem for several days and nights.

Thanks in advance!

Patrick

Hello,

That is a very unusual set of symptoms.

First of all, I assume you have reported this issue to SAP in a customer message. If you have not, that is the appropriate avenue.

I wonder why you are running java and bi-java on the AIX server, as the portal java is the one that is used by the system. I wonder if somehow you are running a mix of IGS on aix and windows? Normally java, bi-java and portal all live together. One reason you might have java / bi-java on the aix side is if you are running UDC or building apps in the SDK prior to installing BI in SAP NetWeaver 2004s, and need to maintain a seperate java instance? Or, perhaps you are using some java clustering technique? Those would be valid reasons for having java on aix and on windows. Otherwise, it seems that you might settle on the landscape, where IGS rides along with the ABAP engine and ADS (Adobe Doc Services) rides along with java/bi-java/portal.

Hello Ron

Yes, we created OSS message with very high, do you need the number?

That's a long story for the system landscape:

We have 2 basis guy installing the system, the first basis install BI ABAP+Java stack in AIX server, after 1 month, the second basis install EP in Windows 2003 server, at that time, we were aware that EP must install together with BI-java, so we install another BI-java in EP server and stop the BI-java instance in AIX server.

We also found IGS component exists both in BI-java(EP server) and BI-ABAP, but don't know exactly which IGS is used.

Anyway, it is also possible the problem not locating on IGS, because even chart not display, scrolling down the big layout also cause the system dead.

any more idea?

Sorry, We are just aware that the IGS ABAP patch is still 7.02 not latest 7.05(IGS for BI-Java already SP5), but we face problem for patching.

We follow the IGS patch chapter of NW04s SP9 installion guide, we are in AIX server,

1.Log on as user <sapsid>adm

2.Extract the downloaded IGS SP5 SAR files of the kernel and the IGS Support Packages to temprary directory aaa

3.Stop the ABAP and Oracle Database

4.Back up the kernel directory

5.copy the file from directory aaa to overwrite the file in /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run and /usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGS01/exe

6.su - root

7.cd /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run

8. ./saproot.sh

9.exit

10. startsap

but the patch level is still 7.02 in http://bwdev.shdl.com:40180/, is there any steps wrong in our procedure?

Dear Patrick,

please check the version of the installed IGS by running "igswd_mt -version" in /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run and /usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGS01/exe. If the version is 7.5 then maybe a different IGS is connected to your system. If it is still 7.2 please do the following:

Extract the IGS SP5 sar file to a tempary folder and copy the result to both /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run and /usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGS01/exe.

After a system restart the latest IGS should run.
