Support Pack Deployment from Solution Manager as Maintenance Project

We want to use Solution Manager (Maintenance Project) to define, guide, and document the iterative installation of Support Packs into the various landscapes.

Is this advisable? Has anyone done this successfully? Would you share your process with us?
