EDI40 and Reorg

Former Member

We have EDI40 in ECC50 (R/3) that had grown to about 150 GB. We archived / purged Idocs and now are in process of reclaining the unused space used by EDI40. We are on Oracle 9i moving to 10G. Have anybody performed reorging on a large "Raw" datatype table? We cannot afford downtime more then a few hours. Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks,

Amit

Hello Amit,

We have re-organized IDOC tables many times; I have used BMC re-organization tools where you can switch the tables with less down time (online reorgs). At my current environment we are using Quest re-org tool and we have recently switched for EDI40.

If you don't have any re-org tools, you might need down time to do this re-org. To answer your question, you might need quiet time to do re-orgs if you are not using online re-orgs.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your quick response. I have a few follow-up questions. If you can answer them I would really appreciate it...

1. How large are your tables and how active is your system

2. how much overhead is incurred (i.e. mainly disk space, and load on the system)during these reorgs?

3. How much time it takes on an average for such a re-org?

4. Do you have any idea on how much this table was compressed?

Any help / answer would help us determine the right tool set we may have to use.

Thanks,

Amit

Hi Amit,

If you do reorganizations with an external (non-sapdba) tool, make sure you consider sap note 154193. Re-collect statistics with brconnect (not SAPDBA as the note suggests). The key piece of information is that if you do tablespace reorganizations (change table location, i.e., into new tablespace), you need to update the ABAP Dictionary table, dd09l, and re-collect statistics.

Good luck!

Paul

<<you need to update the ABAP Dictionary table, dd09l>>

What SAP trans code do you use to update dd09l or do you sqlplus and update the table directly?

Hi William,

Normally it gets updated when you update "technical settings" of a table or index (SE11??). If you are working with a large number of objects you're better off scripting the update and executing via SQL.

hope the below info helps; i recommend you invite various oracle re-org tools/companies, evaluate hands-on and pick one;

1. How large are your tables and how active is your system

EDI tbales are very large for us; the size is approximately 400GB; The total DB size is close to 9TB;

2. how much overhead is incurred (i.e. mainly disk space, and load on the system)during these reorgs?

Not much we are on superdomes - HPUX with 64GB RAM;

3. How much time it takes on an average for such a re-org?

Ran for 9hrs and less than 10 seconds to switch.

4. Do you have any idea on how much this table was compressed?

it did compress and this is something we do every one month with IDOC archiving; we run close to 40,000 IDOC jobs only and i am not sure about the count of idocs but they will be close to 20K count/day;

thanks,
