Measuring usage of a machine

Hi everyone,

I'm relatively new to SAP and I have a few questions. The company I work at, wants to do usage based maintenance. Therefore, I need to measure the usage of the machines. I am exploring different possibilities to do so, to see which one is the best. I have two possibilities but I find it hard to find out how to implement this in SAP. Can you guys help me? These are the possibilities:

- Measuring based on log files from the machine to see how many products it has processed. I know about IDocs, but I have no idea how this works, so I can convert log files from a machine to information in SAP about the number of products it has processed. What I want is a counter, which increases with certain information from a log file. These log files are different, some machines produce a log file for each product it has processed and some produce one for a batch. How can I convert a log file from a machine and get this information in SAP? Where do I start?

- Measuring based on the total number of products produced. In the production order display I can see the total quantity, delivered quantity and scrap quantity. I want to use the delivered quantity to see how much a machine has been used. This information is known. For tools used for a certain product this is also in SAP, the tool used for that product is linked as a consumable (I think so, someone has showed me this but I can't find it myself, but I know this is available). For a machine, this information is known but it is not in SAP. SAP doesn't know which machines will be used to produce a certain product. I want to know for each product how many times it has been produced in total (the sum), then for each machine I want to sum these numbers (for all products produced at this machine). I want this as a measurement point, so I can use this number to monitor the usage in the maintenance strategy. How do I do this?

I know this may be a difficult question, but I have no idea where to start. If you could help me with this, I can look further myself but I have no idea where to start.

Thank you very much in advance!!

Anyone who can help me?

I'd just like to know where to start and in which direction I need to look.

The last option is the most important one, so if someone could just help me with that one, that would be really great.

Thanks in advance :)

I now know how to do the second option. I understood that I need to assign the PRT to an order, and then if the order is confirmed the prt usage wear counter is updated automatically. Then, this counter can be used for the counter-based maintenance plan.

So I only have questions about the first one. Maybe, some further explaination is neccessary:

I want to know how many products a certain machine has processed, and make a counter for this so I can use this for counter-based maintenance. The machine (an injection moulding machine for example) has a certain log file. This log file is in fact an excel file, which consists of a number of lines. Each line gives information about a single shot which the machine performed (the time it took to perform, but also the number of the shot).

I would like to extract this data and put it in SAP, so I can make a measuring point for this, to calculate the usage. I only want to know the number of shots performed and put this in SAP, all other information is irrelevant. How do I do this?

Do I need to convert this data first (with an external program), so I can use IDocs to entern this information in SAP? Is there a standard IDoc which I can use?
