Extending length of material number ?

Can we extend length of material number field (MATNR) in SAP R/3?

If it is possible please provide solution?

    Yes, you can do this by changing the length of the domains which are used in the material number data elements. But I would suggest that you NOT do this. I could cause problems.

    Hi,

    No, it is not advisable to alter the material number length from fixed length of 18 char as it is going to affect the transactions & tables where this field is available,

    It is possible .. but is not advisable to change... Change the Length at the domain level ..

    Hi Vipin,

    Why do you want to do that when you can maintain a very meaningful description of your materials,

    in makt-maktx which is of 40 characters length?

    • Material Number length is configurable. A material number can have a maximum of 18 characters.

      You can configure that in ur system trns SPRO. Read the documentation given.

      SPRO -> Logistic general-> Material master-> Basic settings -> Define output format for material numbers.
