Trigger Output in Shipment VT02N from 'outside'

Hello experts,

I have to following requirement:
I need to trigger a certain output of a shipment from a monitoring program (Button in the monitoring program is pressed->output should be created and be visible in VT02N/VT03N). I know that there is the possibility to do this via BDC and CALL TRANSACTION statement, but my research told me that this technique is kind of 'old fashioned' and there are better ways to do so. Does anyone know what the best way to fullfill the requirement is?
