Telephone number formatting

Does anyone know how I can check the formatting of telephone numbers when creating new business partners?

I would expect it to be controllable via customizing but could not find anything (some kind of setting at country level).

There is surely something provided by our fellow german colleagues or they should stop calling it a CRM package!!!
