Bill Of Materials (BOM) universe design

Hi,
We have a BOM structure as below, so far the best info i got on designing the universe for recursive data is from Dave's blogs http://www.dagira.com/2010/06/25/universe-models-for-recursive-data-part-ii-design-challenges/. However he mentioned the merge/diverge options doesn't work & hence not included in his 2009 presentation. I wanted to know if any progress made on handling this type of data (either part in the back end database & part in the universe). I appreciate if you could share your experience, thoughts & suggestions on achieving this.

Problem definition: The Sales Item is made up of 5 Finished goods, which can be made from some other part in the hierarchy (not necessarily a clean hierachy, may be unbalanced, ragged, lateral, merged). Looking for a universe to provide SI, FG1, FG2, SFG1, SFG2, PM, T1 data using this/modified structure(show null for not applicable ones).
