Differences between routing and rate routing ?

Hi,

I am looking for differences between routing and rate routing from the business perspective.

I know the following :

1. Routings are normally used for Production scenarios while rate routings for repetitive mfg. like car assembly.

2. Rate routings can't have an alternative sequence.

But I am not able to find more documentation on this.

Does anyone has additional inputs ? How exactly is rate routing used in the industry? What are the benefits of using rate routings over routings ?
