Addon revisions

What is the standard way for revisions on an addon? If I have an addon installed, then I needed to make some changes/fixes, do I create a new installer with a new version#, or do I just use the same installer and rebuild it? When I install the changes, do I have to remove the addon and re-register, or is there an easier way to just pick up the new version?
