Storing data - best practice?

Hi,

I wonder if there is any best practice to store data in my EP6.0 portal? For instance, in a standard website if you have a list of events, each event can be stored in a related sql-database and can then be fetched and updated whenever necessary.

What is the best way to do developing portal content? The reason I am asking is because I want to develop a WebDynpro application where I can select a date and then display all registered events on that day in my portal.
