BI 7 FrontEnd Issues

Hi All,

The demos of Netweaver BI 7 were fantastic and most of the clients are really excited in upgrading their current BW Versions to BI 7.0.

But the reality is really different. Clients are evaluating the impact of upgrade from BW 3.5 to BI7. Especially with frontend which is one of the deciding factors from the Business to go ahead with the upgrade, results are not so convincing.

Following are the current issues.

Workbooks which were designed with BW 3.5 would no longer work with BW 7.0. Everything has to be converted manually. Clients whose reporting needs are satisfied with BW Workbooks have to redesign their entire set of workbooks to make use of the BW 7 functionality.

Is there any tool provided by SAP that automatically converts BW 3.5 workbooks to BW 7.0 Workbooks or the client has to develop their own tool for this conversion.

Although there is a possibility of opening BW 3.5 workbooks, there would be a confusion from the user as to where to start with. And if the query is converted to the new version, the old workbook is a junk.

Workbooks designed with Analyzer cannot be opened within Portals. If so no documentation on setting up the portal to open workbooks.

Queries :

All queries opened with the new version cannot be opened with the old version. Which also confuses the user as to what tool to use to open the query BW 7 or BW 3.5.

Variants :

After upgrade, variants are missing.

Variables :

Change in Variable processing type. No proper documentation.

Web reports :

Portal has to be configured to enable using the web application designer. No proper documentation or set up guides to enable.

Bex Browser :

Tool would be discontinued. Lot of clients access the reports/workbooks/webreports using this tool.

No alternate tool provided with the same functionality.

If anyone has succeeded in upgrading overcoming all these issues, through some light on the issues.

Thanks & Regards,

BI Analyst
