Role of SLD in message processing

What role does the SLD play in the integration engine processing of messages?

For example, we have one SLD and for some reason a component changed accidentally, and it was used by a production interface. Would the interface then fail?

If the production system has a fail over mechanism in place for disaster recovery does the SLD also need the same?
