Just a short question.. is it possible to integrate existing, non-SAP, third party applications into the EP?

Any third party application, if it is web enabled, can be integrated in to portal.

You can integrate Java and Microsoft web applications in to portal.
SAP's Single Sign On using logon tickets and user mapping will help you in doing this.
