use same material master for 2 different version of the same material

This is a question about SAP ECC / MM

We are using Material Master to produce the unique reference to tag our Products in the catalogue. So whenever a new version of the product is released, we keep the same reference externally but internally we add a counter.

For example.

Product A has catalogue reference 27369 and that's how our clients see it. We use material master (MM01) to produce that reference. This product may have 1 or more versions and internally they are shown like this.

27369-01,

27369-02

....

Some clients don't care which version they get, actually they don't see it and SAP assigns automatically the newest version (27369-02 ) assuming there is stock of that version to supply the customer order.

The challenge is that some other clients want a specific version, let's say a customer wants version 27369-01, but the system will assign 27369-02. The question is, how can we set-up SAP in a way that for clients that look for a specific version other than the newest, the systems assigns the customer order against that requested version?

The devil is in the details here. Could you clarify what options have you already evaluated and why they did not work out?

I actually do not see how this is related to MM Materials Management as the question is very specific about a problem with customer order

I am still not really convinced if this can be answered by us here as it looks a bit like a home made solution rather than pure SAP customizing.

If your internal versions are material masters then you should eventually be able to achieve it with material determination.
