Upgrade / Migrate - XI 3.0 to PI 7.0

Hi,

We have an XI 3.0 SP17 system and we're in the middle of development. We would like to move to PI 7.0 SP8 and are wondering the best method to do this:

1) Can we install a new PI 7.0 system and then transport XI IR and ID from XI 3.0 to PI 7.0 using CMS or the filesystem?

2) If this isn't possible, has anyone done an upgrade from 3.0 to 7.0? Do we have to go through the complete NetWeaver ABAP and JAVA upgrade guides which seem very extensive?
