Hi all,
Please let me know whether we can determine the max. possible concurrent portal users on a live and running portal(At present I do not have the idea on the usage pattern of and load incurred by the users) .
I read the forum discussion :
But still I am unsure of the exact answer.
Thanks a lot for the help in advance.
Warm Regards,
Lisha
Hi Pascal,
As you had said that this is not a simple calculation but a complex one, I'd surely appreciate if you could provide me further information on just estimating even a very rough figure.
Thanks
Lisha

Hi Lisha,
All depends on the steps your users perform on a portal, their peak activities, system configuration and so on..
As Pascal mentioned previously, you can use Mercury Loadrunner or Eggplant tools to do a load testing on your portal. They should help you much in getting the estimates you are looking.

Hi Pascal,
Thanks againg for responding :).
I have already read this guide.
Is it anyway possible to determine the max. no of users with the hardware and resource information available.
Or with the content type available to users in portal
Thanks.

Lisha

Hi Lisha,
we could now start a long discussion, do you want that?
Okay, just one question: What happens when you exceed the "max. number of users" on your portal? Look, if you have more and more users, the performance goes down. So you have to define a point where you say that's not acceptable anymore. And you've also define which keys define this point (response time for example is surely important but there are others like memory consumption, bandwith usage and so on)
All I want you to tell is that it's not a simple formula and it spits out a number...if it would be that you can be sure that there would be a nive little tool for that (okay, there's a magic 8-ball everywhere...;-))

Pascal
Hi Lisha,
there is simply no exact answer. You have two ways, one is to calculate it theoretically (then you have to have deep knowledge of the technical part of the portal and all involded components, like proxies etc.) and the second way is to run load tests which simulate the average user. But both ways are not exact, meaning you have to monitor the performance on your productive system.
For the seconds way, have a look at SAP Solution Manager Diagnostics, it comes with mercury Loadrunner, a tool that can run load tests.

Pascal

Hi Lisha,
Just as a side note, SMD is mandatory if you run a productive portal, so there's no way around that
Just to give you a quick overview, have a look at the Portal docu here:
The link doesn't work correctly, you can find the docu on the left side under Sizing Guidelines -> Solutions & Platform -> Sizing SAP NetWeaver Portal
Also try out the quicksizer under
https://service.sap.com/quicksizer
For any deeper recommandations you need to give a lot of information about your system landscape, I don't know if that makes sense here...

Pascal
