Explicitly granting read permissions in java.policy
Version: 1, Note Language: EN, Released on: 30.10.2003
Symptom
Graphical components of the applet are not rendered correctly. Apart from that, exceptions are thrown which are shown by the Java console.
Other terms
campaign automation, process model, applet
Reason and Prerequisites
Newer versions of the JRE (Java Runtime Environment), 1.4.1_04 and higher, do not give read permission for certain properties by default anymore. Because of that the XML parser of the CA applet is unable to parse the XML defining the graphical components, which are then rendered incorrectly, and basically are dysfunctional.
Solution
Read permission has to be granted explicitly by making the appropriate entries in the java.policy file. To this end, locate the java.policy file. Normally, it can be found in the directory
"Program Files/Java/j2reXXX_VV/lib/security",
where XXX and VV represent release and support package of the JRE, respectively. For example: XXX = 1.4.1 and VV = 05. Open the file java.policy with any text editor. The so-called "grant block" starts with the key word 'grant' followed by an opening curly brace '{'. It ends with a closing curly brace '}'. Add the following two read permissions to the grant block:
permission java.util. PropertyPermission "entityExpansionLimit", "read";
permission java.util. PropertyPermission "disallowDoctypeDecl", "read";
When you add these permissions, make sure that you do not disturb any of the existing permissions. Typically, choosing a new line for each permission is sufficient.
When restarting the browser the new permissions should become effective. In certain cases it may be necessary to reboot the computer.
